The Force Awakens from the Revenge of the Sith
Read from top to bottom, this is the plot of Episode VII: The Force Awakens. But if you read it in reverse, it’s the plot of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
A child (Rey in VII, Luke Skywalker in III) is left on a desert planet for protection, and a man who knows Leia Organa as a princess of Alderaan (Lor San Tekka in VII, Obi-Wan Kenobi in III) hides on the same planet to keep Luke’s location a secret.
A character whose alternate name is Ben (Kylo Ren in VII, Obi-Wan in III) hunts for a Skywalker (Luke in VII, Anakin in III) to kill him. Meanwhile, a future rebel leader (Finn in VII, Bail Organa in III), who changed sides after seeing stormtroopers exterminate a community (the Jakku villagers in VII, the Jedi in III), helps someone (Poe Dameron in VII, Yoda in III) evade capture. The person rescued is separated from his coat.
Character(s) escape from a desert planet (Jakku in VII, Utapau in III) by stealing a ship.
The mentor figure (Han Solo in VII, Obi-Wan in III) becomes a hunter of monsters (Rathtars in VII, General Grievous in III) and is himself hunted by former associates (the Guavian Death Gang and Kanjiclub in VII, the Clone Army in III) in a space with upper and lower levels (Han’s freighter in VII, Utapau in III).
In VII, Chewbacca and his friends go to a forest planet (Takodana) to get help from a diminutive mystic (Maz Kanata), and in III, a diminutive mystic (Yoda) goes to a forest planet (Kashyyyk) to help Chewbacca and his friends. While the heroes are on the forest planet, the archenemy (Snoke in VII, Palpatine in III) unleashes a sudden full-scale attack witnessed across the galaxy, portrayed in a montage set to mournful music, and the heroes are attacked by stormtroopers.
Horrified by a dark, cryptic vision, the hero (Rey in VII, Anakin in III) rejects the counsel of the diminutive mystic (Maz in VII, Yoda in III) and becomes isolated and vulnerable to capture by the enemy (Kylo Ren in VII, Palpatine in III).
A husband and wife (Han and Leia Organa in VII, Anakin and Padmé Amidala in III) are reunited after a long time apart.
A maverick pilot on a rescue mission (Han in VII, Anakin in III) crash-lands on a planet (Starkiller Base in VII, Coruscant in III), knocking over trees or buildings.
The heroes rescue a Palpatine (Rey in VII, the Chancellor in III) from an enemy stronghold, but the Palpatine, who possesses hitherto unknown powers, does not really need help to be released.
A young man (Kylo Ren in VII, Anakin in III) murders an unarmed old man (Han in VII, Count Dooku in III) at the behest of his Sith master (Palpatine in III, Snoke in VII).
The hero (Rey in VII, Anakin in III) fights and wounds a Sith apprentice (Kylo Ren in VII, Count Dooku in III) while a friend (Finn in VII, Obi-Wan in III) lies wounded and unconscious.
A space battle results in the defeat and retreat of the enemies of the Republic.
In VII, a Palpatine (Rey) goes after a missing Skywalker (Luke), and in III, a Skywalker (Anakin) goes after a kidnapped Palpatine (the Chancellor), believing he is essential to restoring peace to the galaxy.
Episode VII picks up where the last Star Wars film, Episode III, left off ten years prior. The film is about the Force awakening to restore the balance that was lost when the Sith had their revenge.
