SM-33
In "Way, Way Out Past the Barrier" (Skeleton Crew 1.2), the lost kids from At Attin encounter the old droid SM-33 on the pirate ship the Onyx Cinder. SM-33's name is a tongue-in-cheek reference to "Smee," the pirate Captain Hook's loyal first mate in Peter Pan. The name fits: SM-33 is the first mate of the Onyx Cinder and, it turns out, retains some hardwired loyalty to the long-deceased pirate captain Tak Rennod.
SM-33's name points to the broader similarities between Skeleton Crew and Peter Pan. Both are coming-of-age stories about a group of children who leave a sheltered home and go on an adventure to an unknown world, where they run afoul of a gang of villainous pirates. In both cases, the adventure is like a bedtime story come to life: Wendy Darling and her brothers are delighted to finally meet Peter Pan and Wim is thrilled to encounter a real-life Jedi in the form of Jod Na Nawood. Both stories conclude with the kids returning home aboard a pirate ship they have commandeered.
