Rats and Moles
In both A New Hope and Obi-Wan Kenobi, a fugitive Ben Kenobi and one of the Skywalker twins are almost captured by Imperial Stormtroopers because of an alien who resembles a furry pest.
In A New Hope, Ben Kenobi and Luke Skywalker are trying to find a way off the planet Tatooine when they are spotted by the spy Garindan ezz Zavor, who alerts the Empire to their whereabouts. The spy’s long snout and dark goggles are suggestive of a rat’s pointed nose and beady eyes, just as the spy’s one action in the film is to rat people out.
In “Part III” of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ben Kenobi and Leia Organa are trying to find a way off the planet Mapuzo when they hitch a ride with truck-driver Freck, who leads them into a trap at an Imperial checkpoint. Freck looks like a mole, which is appropriate given his blind allegiance to the Empire (“Nothing wrong with a little order, right?”). He also acts like a different type of mole: a spy who gains the trust of his targets. Ironically, Ben and Leia are rescued from Freck’s treachery by the counter-treachery of another mole of this second type. Tala, a Rebel spy embedded in the Empire as an officer, shoots her detachment of Stormtroopers in the back before they can shoot the fugitives.
