Phee and Tech's Brains
In "Bad Territory" (The Bad Batch 3.8), the pirate Phee Genoa is trying to help the Bad Batch figure out why the Empire is hunting Omega by researching what an "M-count" is. Phee remarks that her investigation has not been easy: "Tech's brain was the databank, not mine." This comment underlines the difference between Phee and Tech's brains, while also highlighting why they complemented each other well.
When Phee compares Tech's brain to a "databank," she is voicing what everyone knows: Tech has a mind like a computer. He is highly analytical and retains vast amounts of hard, objective data. Tech's databank-like mind can be seen at work when he trains Omega to memorize the Bad Batch's battle plans, all of which he has organized and numbered.
Phee's brain, on the other hand, is full of stories and myths. In "Entombed" (The Bad Batch 2.5), she is introduced telling a colorful story about her own adventures, and she tells Omega that she hunts for treasure by following "legends." Tech and Hunter comment on the unreliability of Phee's stories, noting how she embellishes them in different ways each time she retells them. However, legends can also reveal truths that hard data cannot. When Omega finds an ancient relic with coordinates to the long-lost Kaldar Trinary system, Tech quickly disregards it, consulting his datapad and saying: "I have no record of that system." Phee retorts: "Because the best treasures usually aren't found on maps."
Tech's brain is oriented towards the kind of knowledge that one gains from rational observation and analysis of facts. Phee's brain is oriented towards the kind of knowledge that one gains from stories and legends. Both kinds of knowledge can reveal truth; as Omega remarks at the end of "Entombed," "The legend was real."
