Partnering with Snakes
In the second act of The Last Jedi, two women form alliances with untrustworthy men who they compare to snakes.
When Rey speaks to Kylo Ren through the Force, she lashes out at him by calling him a “murderous snake.” However, after learning more about his past with Luke Skywalker, she decides to form an alliance with him. This partnership proves beneficial for a short while, as Rey and Kylo are able to kill Supreme Leader Snoke and his guards together, but Kylo ultimately betrays Rey and tries to destroy the Resistance.
When Rose Tico meets DJ in the jail on Canto Bight, she is immediately wary and distrustful of him. However, after he helps her escape, she decides to form an alliance with him. This partnership proves beneficial for a short while, as DJ is able to help sneak Rose onto Supreme Leader Snoke’s flagship, but when they are caught by the First Order, DJ’s betrayal nearly leads to the destruction of the Resistance, and Rose lashes out at him by calling him a “lying snake.”
In desperate circumstances, when other options seem to be failing them, Rey and Rose both make partnerships with men they have good reason not to trust. These partnerships may help in the short term, but they end in betrayal and disappointment because of these new allies’ slippery, self-serving nature.
