Parallel Volumes
Volumes 1 and 2 of the Clone Wars micro-series follow a very similar structure:
On Coruscant, Anakin Skywalker receives a promotion. In Vol. 1, against Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda’s objections, Chancellor Palpatine gives him the command of a space force. In Vol. 2, Obi-Wan nominates him to become a Jedi Knight, and Yoda consents despite the reservations of other Jedi Masters. In both, Anakin has a brief wordless interaction with his wife Padmé Amidala before flying away in his starfighter.
Obi-Wan breaches the defenses of a Separatist city using stealth. In Vol. 1, he sends a team of elite troopers to sneak inside the city and destroy a cannon. In Vol. 2, Anakin shows him a way to sneak inside the city and destroy its shield generator.
Count Dooku duels with his latest apprentice while Darth Sidious observes via hologram, then the two assign the apprentice a mission. In Vol. 1, before sending her to kill Anakin, Dooku tells Asajj Ventress she is not yet a Sith because “I sense much fear in you.” In Vol. 2, before sending him to attack Coruscant, Dooku warns General Grievous that “You must have fear … on your side.”
A plot set in motion by Darth Sidious/Palpatine lures Anakin away from the war. In Vol. 1, Ventress destroys Anakin’s fleet and eggs him into following her into hyperspace, despite Obi-Wan’s warnings. In Vol. 2, Palpatine directs Anakin and Obi-Wan to look for Grievous on Nelvaan, despite Mace Windu’s doubts about the “questionable intel” and Obi-Wan’s own misgivings.
During a rescue mission on a snowy planet, a Jedi discovers that a sacred place has been desecrated by Separatists. In Vol. 1, Yoda goes to Ilum to rescue two Jedi and finds the Jedi temple there has been destroyed by droids sent by Dooku. In Vol. 2, Anakin goes looking for the missing Nelvaan warriors and discovers that a mountain sacred to the Nelvaanians has been turned into a laboratory for cyborg experiments ordered by Grievous.
Anakin is victorious in a severe trial, but only by giving into his anger. In Vol. 1, he endures a grueling duel with Ventress, then mercilessly kills her. In Vol. 2, he suffers intense pain to destroy the crystal that powered the cyborg laboratory, then mercilessly kills the scientists who experimented on the Nelvaan warriors.
Anakin talks with Obi-Wan about his trial, but they are distracted from reflecting on its significance by urgent news of a devastating attack led by Grievous. In Vol. 1, Master Barrek’s hologram tells them Grievous has wiped out his army. In Vol. 2, Windu’s hologram tells them Grievous has besieged Coruscant and abducted Palpatine.
