Lightsabers in the Sand
At the end of “Part I” of Obi-Wan Kenobi, the exiled Ben Kenobi goes into the desert of Tatooine with a shovel to dig up a wooden chest in which he hid two lightsabers: his own, and Anakin Skywalker’s, to be given to Anakin’s son Luke in A New Hope.
Earlier in the episode, Ben had told another Jedi exile, Nari, to do as he did and bury his lightsaber in the desert, because “The fight is done.” But now Ben retrieves his lightsaber for what Bail Organa calls “one last fight”: to go rescue Anakin’s daughter Leia. Although Ben tried to bury his past, he discovers the past isn’t really past. He digs up his lightsaber because his part in the Skywalker story is not over.
At the end of The Rise of Skywalker, Rey goes to the abandoned Lars homestead on Tatooine and uses the Force to bury two lightsabers: Leia’s, and the Skywalker saber (created by Anakin and passed down to Luke) that Ben previously buried on the same planet.
Just as he did, Rey first tucks the lightsabers into a piece of cloth before putting them underground. Now that Luke, Leia, and Leia’s son – another Ben – have all died, the Skywalker story is ended, and their past can finally be laid to rest.
