Hiding in the Garbage
In both A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, the heroes are able to effectively evade the Empire by hiding in the Empire's garbage.
In A New Hope, Luke Skywalker and Han Solo rescue Princess Leia Organa from her prison cell on the Death Star, but find themselves cornered in a hallway by Stormtroopers. Leia has the idea to escape by taking a garbage chute down into a trash compactor.
In The Empire Strikes Back, Han and Leia escape Hoth aboard the Millennium Falcon, but find themselves cornered by Star Destroyers when their ship's hyperdrive fails. Han has the idea to attach the Falcon to a Star Destroyer, wait until it jettisons its trash, and then float away "with the rest of the garbage."
The Empire's preoccupation with order and control is reflected in the cleanliness of its aesthetics, from the sterile, symmetrical hallways of its spaceships to the pristine, orderly uniforms of its officers. Garbage is hidden out of sight and disposed of, and the ragtag Rebels are able to evade the Imperials' notice by blending in with the junk they would rather ignore.
