Final Duels
The final lightsaber duels of the three trilogies of the Skywalker Saga are linked in a poetic pattern. In each case, the confrontation begins with a conversation before descending into violence.
In Revenge of the Sith, the third installment of the prequel trilogy, Obi-Wan Kenobi confronts Anakin Skywalker on the volcanic planet Mustafar. The duel begins on a landing platform before the combatants descend to the facility's lower levels, where waves of lava crash around them as they fight.
In Return of the Jedi, the third installment of the original trilogy, Luke Skywalker confronts his father Anakin – now Darth Vader – on the second Death Star. The duel begins at the throne of Emperor Palpatine before the combatants descend to a lower level of the throne room.
In The Rise of Skywalker, the third installment of the sequel trilogy, Anakin's grandson Kylo Ren confronts Rey in the ruins of the second Death Star, located on the ocean planet Kef Bir. The duel begins at the long-abandoned throne of Emperor Palpatine before the combatants descend into the lower levels of the wrecked space station, where waves of water crash around them as they fight.
The final duel of the sequel trilogy recapitulates the final duels of both preceding trilogies. As in Return of the Jedi, the duel takes place on the second Death Star, and as in Revenge of the Sith, the combatants are surrounded by the violence of the elements.
