Ezra's Twin Moons
In “Legacy” (Rebels 2.11), Ezra Bridger gazes longingly at Lothal’s twin moons after learning that his parents died attempting to escape from an Imperial prison camp. The image of the show’s young hero looking at the twin moons is an overt parallel to A New Hope‘s iconic image of Luke Skywalker, the young hero of the original trilogy, gazing longingly at Tatooine’s twin suns – but the emotional meaning of the scene is completely reversed.
For Luke, the binary sunset represents the possibility of adventure beyond the bounds of Uncle Owen’s farm. He gazes at Tatooine’s twin suns because he yearns to leave his home and family. In direct contrast, for Ezra, the binary moonset brings about a vision of the peace he and his parents enjoyed before the arrival of the Empire. He gazes at Lothal’s twin moons because he yearns to return to the home and family he once had.
